About Whelen
Industry-leading emergency warning and lighting solutions designed with your critical missions in mind, manufactured in America for more than 70 years.
My Role
I was the sole UI/UX designer on the project, partnering closely with the lead UI developer to design and refine the product experience. I collaborated with the product manager and engineering team throughout the development process, translating product requirements and technical constraints into clear, usable interfaces.
Takeaways
Regular stakeholder reviews were valuable for incorporating feedback from both the internal product team and Whelen’s domain experts. However, because many requirements evolved as we explored new capabilities like over-the-air updates and fleet-level device management, earlier alignment on scope and system constraints would have helped reduce iteration cycles and streamline development.
Working closely with hardware-focused stakeholders was also a valuable learning experience. Many of the product decisions needed to balance real-world operational constraints, such as vehicle status and device connectivity, with intuitive software workflows that could scale across large fleets.
The project provided an opportunity to introduce modern product design practices into a traditionally hardware-driven environment. Establishing clearer workflows, structured interfaces, and data-driven dashboards helped transform complex operational processes into more accessible and manageable software experiences.
