The Problem
We needed to build exams with the ability to tag questions and answers, and be able to easily analyze results. With the results of the exams we need a video library that’s easy to navigate through topics, have video quiz and practice assignment flows that are not frustrating, and keep the student on a clear success path.
Research
We researched direct competitors such as Khan Academy and Udemy, as well as video learning UIs like Peloton. We interviewed professors from various schools to understand what they like, don’t like, and think is missing in their current solution – especially from an analytics standpoint.
Teamwork
I worked very closely with the UI Lead on UX and UI, while being kept in check on technical realities. I was involved at every stage of the development process with the PM, Stakeholder, and development team.
Takeaways
I learned to involve customers early in the design process to get valuable feedback, not just in the research phase. I also learned how better verbally and visually communicate with developers, so there wasn’t a constant back-and-forth on details. Having a Design System became a critical need for myself and the development team, something we implemented half way through the project to ensure consistency and repeatability.
Assessment Taker
Assessment interface for students making it easy to navigate through questions, pin questions for followup, and simple progress indicators. Upon completion the student gets their score, which class their score places them, and top topics they struggled with the most.
Assessment Builder & Deployment
Easily build and deploy placement and exams where instructors can typeset, input mathematical formulas with KaTeX support, tag questions and answers with concepts, view data analytics on assessments. The instructor is able to build out cohorts of students and configure deployments for placements.
Analytics
Cohort and student level analytics for instructors with the ability to drill down to the topic-level seeing where a class or student struggled with the most.
Learn Library & Video Quizzes
A easy to navigate video library by organized by subject and topic. Videos have embedded quizzes that know why you answer incorrectly and sends you back to the timestamp that helps you understand the concept you got wrong.
Personalized Study Plan
Once enough information was gathered on a student a personalized study plan is created to offer a targeted approach to remediation. A section on the student's homepage would highlight areas they need to work on the most. A separate page displays their full study plan, broken out into Sub-Topics. Each sub-topic's study plan had a set of relevant videos with associated practice assignments.
